I want to share two topics that came up this week from my K9sOverCoffee readers:

Importance of iodine in prey model diets and BARF diets:

If you feed any raw meals that don't include kelp, you'll be low on iodine. The easiest way to supply iodine is by adding in kelp powder.

However, some dogs - like my reader's Frank's - greetings your way! - don't tolerate kelp or don't like the taste of kelp, in which case your only workaround is to use iodine drops or feed whole prey animals that still have their thyroid glands attached.

Just keep in mind that most iodine drops are made for humans, so you'll need to calculate your dog's individual iodine needs before dosing.

What to do with salmon fins?

One of my readers (hi, Allison!) had a question about what she could do with salmon fins. My answer: add to your dog's raw meals or dehydrate as a yummy snack! You can either use a dehydrator or your oven on the lowest temperature setting.
