Here's a question I get a lot: "If I switch my dog to raw, will he lose weight?"

Short answer: maybe. But not for the reason most people think.

Raw food doesn't magically burn fat. It works the same way any diet works, for dogs or for us: a real calorie deficit. The food type just changes how you get there.

That's the whole subject of this week's post, and it covers two situations I hear about:

Your dog is on kibble and overweight, and you're wondering if raw would help.
Your dog is already raw-fed and still put on weight, and you're not sure how to adjust the ration.

The math is different for each one, so I walked through both, with a real worked example (a 70 lb Golden Retriever who needs to get to 60 lb) so you can see exactly how the numbers move.

To make this easier than doing the math by hand, I built a free calculator right into the post. Plug in your dog's current food and weight, and your goal weight, and it works out a starting daily ration for you, including how long a safe weight loss actually takes (it's slower than you'd think).
