Should Dalmatians skip organs?

Hey, Reader!

A few years ago, a reader named Suzy asked me whether her two Dalmatians could eat raw. Most Dals carry a gene that makes it hard to break down uric acid, which puts them at risk for bladder stones.

So the standard advice back then was simple: no organs at all, no fish, no red meat.

I passed that advice on. And later, when another reader asked about green tripe for her Dalmatian puppy, I said yes.

Since then, I’ve gone much deeper into purines in my BARF nutrition consultant training.

Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Cutting out organs completely isn’t the answer. But which organs you feed matters a lot.
  • Green tripe? I’d now leave it out, even though it technically counts as muscle meat.
  • Beef isn’t off the table. Something else matters much more than whether it’s red or white meat.
  • And not every Dalmatian even needs a special diet. One little detail decides it.

So I gave my blog entry on Dalmations an overhaul, including a sample day for a 55 lb Dal, a list of foods high in purines, and what I’d do differently for Norman, the raw-fed UK Dal from the original post.

My free raw dog food calculator also got an upgrade: pick “Dalmatian,” and it switches to a purine-conscious plan automatically.

Read the updated Dalmatian guide

Even if you don’t have a Dal, it’s worth a read if your dog is a Bulldog, Mini Schnauzer, Yorkie or Shih Tzu. Some of them carry the same gene.

Happy raw feeding,
Barbara

P.S. Know someone with a Dalmatian? Forward them this email. It might help them figure out their diet.
