If you've been raw feeding for a while, you've probably heard the classic rule: feed 2 to 3 percent of your dog's body weight per day. It's a fine place to start. But it treats a 10 lb Yorkshire Terrier and a 150 lb Great Dane exactly the same, and their bodies don't work the same. Small dogs burn through energy faster relative to their size, so they need a bigger share of their body weight in food. Large dogs need less. Feed both 2.5 percent, and one may slowly lose weight while the other slowly gains. This topic came up in my raw nutrition course at THP School, and it made me take a hard look at my own raw dog food calculator. It used one flat percentage for every dog, no matter the size. So I fine-tuned it. The daily amount now scales with your dog's size. You can pick from over 130 breeds, from Chihuahuas to Caucasian Ovcharkas (and yes, Wally's breed, the Feist, made the list). Puppy amounts now don't just depend on age but also on their expected adult size. 💡And there's something new for Dalmatian owners, too. Curious whether your dog's amount changes? Plug in their numbers and compare the result to what you're feeding now. Happy raw feeding, P.S. Know a breeder who feeds raw? Send them my way. I'm adding more to my list of raw-feeding US breeders, and their breed might already be waiting in the calculator. My raw feeding recommendations:
